VPN Unlimited is a well-known service launched in 2013 by US-based company KeepSolid, Inc. With a focus on security and with more than 10 million users worldwide, it’s definitely a VPN to have on your radar.

The provider guarantees unlimited online access, but can they make good on this promise? Can we stream and download without any restrictions? Or is there a limit to this VPN service’s capabilities, after all?

VPN Unlimited’s strength is, undoubtedly, security. You won’t have any issues circumventing censorship and geographical restrictions with the offered encryption protocols. The server network might not be very large, but the VPN does offer decent enough speeds for streaming and torrenting. On top of that, it’s possible to rent your personal VPN server, and the VPN Unlimited app is user-friendly. You also get up to 10 simultaneous connections.

Unfortunately, VPN Unlimited also has its weaknesses. The service logs certain data. It can also take a while to connect to a server. And finally, the installation process is not the most straightforward we’ve seen.

Speed – How Fast is VPN Unlimited?

Whether you use a VPN to unblock content or to browse safely and anonymously, you can’t do either without fast speeds. This is why we always thoroughly test each provider’s speed capabilities.

Overall, we give VPN Unlimited a score of 4 out of 10 for speed. Here’s what we experienced:

• Speed on local servers is good.
• Connection speeds for distant servers varied.
• You can play games with VPN Unlimited, but lagging is a real issue.

Speed test results for VPN Unlimited

In order to get objective test results, we tested VPN Unlimited via speedtest.net from our corporate headquarters in the Netherlands. As you can see, we first ran a benchmark test without the use of a VPN.

Depending on your connection and physical location, your speeds might vary. Having said that, the values in the table below can be viewed as good indicators of speed results you can get with VPN Unlimited.

As you can see in the table above, the more distant servers in the United States slowed down our connection quite significantly.

Moreover, our speed results differed from test session to test session. If one day we’d get a download speed of 25.61 Mb/s, the next day the speeds on the same server would be 2.56 Mb/s. From time to time, we weren’t able to connect at all. Connections didn’t come close to the results of our fastest VPNs.

We do want to note that during earlier testing (November 2021), speed results were a lot better. We were able to reach a download speed of 84.8 Mb/s on our U.S. servers (compared to a benchmark speed of 94.77 Mb/s).

Clearly, connection speeds on VPN Unlimited servers, especially more distant ones, are not very consistent.

Speed during daily use

After our official speed tests, we were initially pleasantly surprised with VPN Unlimited’s speeds during daily use. When browsing, pages took a bit longer to load on the Las Vegas server. YouTube videos, however, played without any lagging and in HD.

When testing the VPN a couple more times, however, our browser experiences matched our low expectations: it was pretty much impossible to go online with this VPN service.

As soon as we tried to do multiple things at once, for example opening pages while streaming music, VPN Unlimited struggled with our requests. Games took a very long time to load and showed considerable lagging. This is not the gaming VPN we were hoping for.

Safety – How Secure is VPN Unlimited?

Online security is an essential part of a VPN service. Regardless of any other features, your VPN should keep you anonymous and encrypt your data traffic.

Let’s have a look at VPN Unlimited’s protocols, logging practices, and the information required for registration.

Taking everything into account, we give VPN Unlimited a score of 8 out of 10 for safety. Here are our most important finds:

• VPN Unlimited supports a variety of safe protocols (OpenVPN, WireGuard, IKEv2, KeepSolid Wise TCP/UDP, and L2TP/IPSec).
• The service comes with an automatic kill switch.
• KeepSolid VPN Unlimited keeps certain logs.
• You can purchase a subscription anonymously.

Protocols

We can’t have a versatile VPN without a variety of VPN protocols. Your VPN has to be flexible enough to tackle everything from demanding stream sessions to online censorship.

With a VPN Unlimited plan, these are the VPN protocols you can choose between:

• OpenVPN (TCP/UDP) with AES-256 encryption: OpenVPN is still the golden standard in the VPN world. TCP is fast but blocked quite easily. UDP is more resilient but slower.
• WireGuard: This is the youngest protocol on the list, but it has quickly become known for its speed and security. The encryption used on this protocol is ChaCha20.
• IKEv2: This protocol provides excellent speeds but is easily blocked. It supports AES-256, Camelia 256-bit, and ChaCha20 encryption.
• KeepSolid Wise (TCP/UDP/TLS) with AES-256 encryption: This is KeepSolid’s original protocol, which is based on OpenVPN. It disguises your VPN traffic to look like regular browsing. It uses the TCP 443 and UDP 33434 ports, which makes it very difficult to block. Excellent for streaming Netflix or to get around Chinese censorship, for example.
• L2TP/IPSec: This combination is relatively fast and secure, but inferior to the likes of OpenVPN and WireGuard.

You can select your protocol manually in the VPN Unlimited client under the “Network settings” or “Settings” tabs. If you don’t have a preference, the VPN will select the best protocol for you.

Unfortunately, not every protocol is available on every operating system or device. Moreover, VPN Unlimited’s browser extensions only have TLS encryption.

Logging and privacy

KeepSolid claims to provide a zero-logs VPN. As we’ll see, that’s not exactly true. While they don’t collect any browser data, the provider does store some logs.

Here’s what VPN Unlimited doesn’t collect:

• Activity logs: This includes your browsing history, metadata, timestamps, server usage, and downloads.
• Your IP address: The software does collect your real IP for the duration of the VPN session. It is discarded immediately after you disconnect.
• Your full name: Unlike many VPN providers, KeepSolid doesn’t require your full name to provide the service.

The fact that KeepSolid, via VPN Unlimited, doesn’t store your online activity is a great plus. This means your private data won’t end up with authorities upon request.

But let’s not forget that KeepSolid is an American company, which means it falls under the 5 Eyes alliance. The only way for VPN Unlimited to remain a safe service for its users is to log nothing of substance.

With that in mind, here’s the information the company does collect:

• User info: This means your email and social networks IDs (only if you log in through social networks, which, from a privacy standpoint, we don’t recommend).
• Device info: This includes your device name/ID, operating system, the number of connected devices, browser type, the language of the device, app usage, time zone, activation date, VPN client, and installed updates.
• Location info: This refers to your IP address (temporary) and geographic location.
• Cookies: KeepSolid uses cookies and pixel tags to gauge your usage of their website and services.

If KeepSolid does hand over your data to the authorities, they’ll be able to figure out who you are but not what you’ve been doing online. This will keep the damage to a minimum.

However, if VPN Unlimited’s servers get hacked, the attackers will get their hands on a lot of private info they could use to mount an attack against you. They’ll have your email, device ID, geographic location, and potentially even your social media handles. With regard to online scams such as business email compromises and doxing attacks, this can be a real risk.

The chances of KeepSolid’s servers getting hacked are low but never zero. So, we hope the company tightens up its logging practices in the future and stop recording info that could be used against its users.

Kill switch

VPN Unlimited comes with an automatic kill switch that kicks in when your VPN falters. It cuts your VPN connection to prevent data leaks if the connection unexpectedly falters.

On macOS and iOS, the kill switch is unfortunately only available with the IKEv2 protocol. On Android, VPN Unlimited uses a system kill switch, and it’s only available on Android 8.0 Oreo and higher.

Does VPN Unlimited leak your data?

In order to confirm that VPN Unlimited actually does what it’s supposed to do, we used an IP address tool to confirm we actually received a new IP. After connecting to a VPN Unlimited server, our IP changed like it was supposed to and showed the new location of the server we selected: a local server in Amsterdam.

To make sure the VPN doesn’t leak any data, we also ran a distant server test using Browser Leaks. We connected to a server in Florida (United States). The VPN gave us great results. The IP changed along with our server location. On top of that, we suffered no DNS leaks or WebRTC leaks.

What information does VPN Unlimited need?

When it comes to sign-up data, we prefer providing as little information as possible. VPN Unlimited is one of those great VPN services that only require your email and password to generate an account.

You do have to submit payment details, but KeepSolid’s privacy statement claims that it doesn’t store this anywhere. Instead, this info stays with Google, PayPal, or whichever other service you use for your payments.

If you use an anonymous and encrypted email service and pay for your VPN using Bitcoin, it’s possible to get a VPN Unlimited plan completely anonymously.

Do keep in mind that you need to be able to access the email address you create. This is because VPN Unlimited requires you to log in with a verification code via email every time you use the app. This means burner emails aren’t ideal for signing up.

Usability – How User-Friendly is VPN Unlimited?

Speed and safety are necessary VPN characteristics. However, if you can’t figure out how a VPN service works, then your subscription isn’t going to help. Luckily, VPN Unlimited comes with a pretty beginner-friendly client. However, you first have to go through the setup process, which requires some tinkering.

To gauge VPN’s overall usability, we take a look at its official website, installation process, clients, prices, and customer support. Overall, we give VPN Unlimited a 7 out of 10 for user-friendliness.

Here are some key points:

• The VPN Unlimited website is easy to navigate.
• The setup process could be simplified.
• The VPN Unlimited clients are intuitive and beginner-friendly.
• Crypto payments are accepted.
• Split tunneling is possible on Android.
• VPN Unlimited has expert customer support, but no live chat.

VPN Unlimited’s website and installation process

VPN Unlimited’s site is very easy to navigate. On the homepage, you can find the latest deals, as well as an overview of the main VPN Unlimited features.

Via the menu at the top of the page, you can navigate to various tabs, including prices, extras (for example, the option to get a dedicated IP), downloads, and the support center. This is also where you can sign into your own account.

At the bottom of the homepage you can find additional information about the company. You can check out “Our mission” and “Press room” for the latest updates. This is also where you can find VPN Unlimited’s privacy policy, terms of service, and copyright regulations.

Finally, there’s a blog page with the latest news from KeepSolid and the VPN world.

Downloading the VPN Unlimited client is easy enough, though a bit cumbersome. Here’s the entire installation process:

1. Go to the official website.
2. Under “Prices” you can select the subscription of your choice.

6. Download the right software for your operating system. If you’re on Windows, you’ve got the option to download VPN Unlimited from the Microsoft Store or directly from the provider’s website. Keep in mind that these are different clients with different features. More about this in the next section. Apps exist for the following operating systems:

9. Open the app and sign in with your login details. Once you do, you’ll see this screen:

12. To remain more anonymous online, make sure to disable the Connection feedbacks and Network traffic counter in Settings.

VPN Unlimited’s appearance and ease of use

VPN Unlimited offers two different clients with different features. This is why we assess the VPN Unlimited Windows client (which you can download from the Microsoft Store) and the stand-alone client you can download from the website separately.

VPN Unlimited Microsoft client

The VPN Unlimited Microsoft client is straightforward and organized. As soon as you log in, you can see a map of the world and a large Start button that instantly gets you online via a VPN server. On the left side, you can find various tabs, including settings and account info.

We do wish you could click the location on the map you’d like to connect to. NordVPN has a feature like that. In VPN Unlimited, the map is only for show.

As stated, it can take a while to connect to a distant server. When we tried disconnecting, the response was very delayed. This means you accidentally end up clicking the button too often and connecting and disconnecting too many times. Regrettably, disconnecting also crashed the app multiple times.

There are two menus for app settings: “Network settings” and “Settings.” The first one allows you to select a VPN protocol and enable the DNS firewall if you purchased a subscription that includes this feature.

In the regular Settings menu, you can change the app’s display (choose between light or dark mode), allow VPN Unlimited to send you notifications, and decide whether you’d like to send connection logs to the provider.

Keep in mind that “Connection feedbacks” is automatically enabled. If you don’t want VPN Unlimited to receive these logs, you need to change this manually in the settings.

VPN Unlimited stand-alone client

This application is also well-organized. You can see the same map of the world, the connection button, and the server you can connect to or are already connected to. As with the Microsoft app, you can’t click the map to select a VPN server.

You can open the menu in the left top corner. There are four tabs:

• My account: This is where you can see the duration of your subscription and change your password.
• Settings: Select your VPN protocol and enable the DNS Firewall, if this is included in your plan. You can also prevent DNS leaks by using the kill switch and “whitelist” safe networks. This feature is not available in the Microsoft app.
• Information: Under this tab, you can check whether there’s a new update available. There’s also a link to send a feedback email to the provider and you can access the website’s About page from here.
• Support: This links you to a built-in contact form so you can reach out to customer service, as well as the FAQ page on the VPN Unlimited website. You’ve also got the option to get your VPN connection assessed.

Split tunneling

The split tunnel feature is only available on Android smartphones. It allows you to run select traffic via your VPN. For example, you might want to download safely without losing much speed during streaming. In that case, you run your streaming services over your regular connection but encrypt your torrent client with a VPN.

You can find this feature under the App Exceptions tab in the Settings menu.

Network whitelister

The network whitelister allows you to access trusted networks without VPN protection. For example, you can disable your VPN on a closed business network that can only transmit secure data.

Using the whitelister is very simple: just add the name of the trusted network to the list of exceptions. However, mastering this tool means knowing exactly which networks you can trust.

Therefore, we don’t recommend tampering with this option too much unless you absolutely know what you’re doing. Whitelisting an unsecured public network in a cafe, for example, can have disastrous consequences.

Pricing and payment methods

VPN Unlimited is averagely priced. At the moment, you have four different plans at your disposal:

• 1 month: $9.99 per month (billed $9.99 monthly)
• 1 year: $5.00 per month (billed $59.99 annually)
• 3 years: $49,99 (billed once, you pay an average of $1.39 a month)
• Lifetime subscription: $99.99 (billed once)

On top of that, you can add on KeepSolid’s “MonoDefense” at different prices (from $2.00 for a monthly subscription to $300 for a lifetime plan). This includes a password manager, DNS firewall, and Smart DNS. The firewall used to be a part of VPN Unlimited. In July 2021, however, it became a separate tool that costs extra.

For each subscription, there’s a 30-day money-back guarantee. This means you can get a refund on your payment within the first 30 days of use, in case VPN Unlimited is not the VPN provider you want. You can request this refund via customer service.

The accepted VPN Unlimited payment methods include:

Customer service

Here’s what we’re interested in when talking about good customer service:

• The volume of information available on the official website (FAQs, knowledge bases, etc.)
• The ways you can contact the support team (live chat, email, phone, ticket systems, etc.)
• The expertise and response times of the support team

KeepSolid offers an extensive knowledge base on the VPN Unlimited site. We found a lot of useful FAQs paired with a ton of setup manuals. Having said that, some of the information seems to be outdated.

VPN Unlimited states that it offers 24/7 live chat and email support. However, their “live chat” is not what you might imagine. You can ask your questions through the live chat-like interface, but they’ll respond via email.

Once you click send, you’ll receive a confirmation email within a couple of minutes. The response came about an hour later, which is quite impressive.

KeepSolid’s customer support was a pleasant surprise. We were pleased to see professional staff that can tackle VPN-related problems.

Usually, companies with many different products employ a general support team that struggles even with the most basic of issues. Fortunately, KeepSolid VPN Unlimited is not one of them. Huge thumbs up from us for quality customer service.

Server Network – Can VPN Unlimited Unblock the Internet?

Large VPN server networks increase your chances of “unblocking the internet” without any lag or speed drops. They also help you avoid server crowding, which happens when providers amass more VPN users than they can support.

Whether you’re looking to catch some Netflix shows unavailable in your country or deal with online censorship, having more servers will increase your chance of success on both accounts.

For its server network, VPN Unlimited gets a score of 6.5 out of 10. Things to keep in mind regarding the provider:

• VPN Unlimited operates 500+ VPN servers across 50 countries.
• You can rent personal servers.
• VPN Unlimited works with Netflix.
• Torrenting is possible on American servers but is slow.
• Dedicated IPs are available on VPN Unlimited.

Number of servers and locations

VPN Unlimited has 500+ servers in 54 countries. This is a modest amount — nothing to write home about. It can’t compete with the likes of Private Internet Access (30,000+ servers), but it still beats BolehVPN (only 35 servers).

You can access the list of available locations from the main screen of your VPN Unlimited client. Every server has a signal strength indicator next to it, as well as ping values for your location.

But can VPN Unlimited unblock your favorite streaming apps? We decided to put the VPN’s unblocking capability to the test. You can find the results in the table below.

When connected to the Netflix servers, we were able to unblock Netflix USA. While it took some time for the movie to load, we didn’t experience any lagging while streaming with VPN Unlimited.

Keep in mind that the streaming servers are still located in specific countries. The Netflix server, for example, is located in the United States. If you want to watch Japanese Netflix, you’re going to need to connect to a regular VPN Unlimited server in Japan.

We weren’t able to connect to the dedicated streaming server for BBC iPlayer. We did manage to connect to a regular server in London. This managed to unblock BBC iPlayer. Unfortunately, we did experience some lagging on this server.

Connecting to the Disney Plus server was easy enough. But again, the dedicated server wouldn’t let us access Disney Plus. Unfortunately, we also weren’t able to get Disney to work on a regular VPN server.

Finally, we tested HBO Max. While VPN Unlimited does not have a dedicated streaming server for HBO Max, we know many users are eager to stream House of the Dragon at the moment. Again, we were unsuccessful. Our VPN use was repeatedly detected.

All in all, we’re glad to see that Netflix and other streaming apps work with VPN Unlimited, but it still doesn’t compare to our best Netflix VPNs.

VPN Unlimited and torrents

VPN Unlimited allows anonymous P2P filesharing on more than one dedicated server (Ontario, Paris, and Bucharest). Even so, VPN Unlimited still isn’t the best VPN for torrenting.

KeepSolid VPN Unlimited warns that they might resort to speed throttling when you use the VPN for torrenting. They justify this by stating that the main purpose of VPN Unlimited is providing online safety, not downloading torrents.

Since they only have three torrenting servers, KeepSolid can monitor torrenting bandwidth without resorting to activity logging. If the bandwidth loads on these VPN Unlimited servers go too far, they will throttle them to ensure proper operation.

Finally, KeepSolid VPN Unlimited has blocked torrenting and illegal streaming sites on its American servers. Due to a copyright lawsuit, you can’t access The Pirate Bay, RARBG, 1337x, Popcorn Time, and YTS with VPN Unlimited. BitTorrent also doesn’t work.

With these considerations in mind, it’s safe to say that VPN Unlimited might not be the perfect P2P tool. If torrenting is important to you, we recommend finding a better option on our list of the best VPNs for torrenting. You also might want to check our guide on the best torrent sites.

Dedicated IP address

VPN Unlimited offers dedicated IP addresses for a fee ($14.99 a month). They call them “personal static IPs,” which means the IP address never changes, and only you can use them.

Dedicated IPs help you avoid CAPTCHA popups and make online payments easier. Platforms like Netflix are also far less likely to blacklist a dedicated IP.

Many services will flag your account if you’re constantly accessing it with different IPs. That’s why so many shared VPN IPs get blacklisted. A dedicated address is tied to your VPN Unlimited account and will help you get around this obstacle.

Personal IPs are available in Canada, France, Germany, India, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Personal servers

VPN Unlimited also allows you to rent a personal server. You can use a personal server if you want to avoid server crowding. If you’re an avid gamer, for example, having a server all to yourself will give you much better speeds. You don’t have to share any VPN Unlimited resources with any other users.

Moreover, according to KeepSolid VPN Unlimited, having a personal server makes you “the most valued customer of all.” You get high-priority customer support and the added bonus of a free VPN subscription with your purchase.

Our Experience with VPN Unlimited

VPN Unlimited is not unlimited when it comes to features. While the provider offers top-notch encryption protocols and solid security, it still logs quite a lot of data. You can get additional safety features, such as a firewall and SmartDNS, but at a price. On top of that, VPN Unlimited speeds tend to vary a lot.

Additionally, the installation process is unnecessarily cumbersome. You have to pay attention to which client you download, or you might not get access to all features. The VPN Unlimited Microsoft app, for example, doesn’t allow you to whitelist trusted networks. By comparison, the stand-alone client doesn’t allow you to stop sending connection logs to the provider.

All in all, VPN Unlimited is a decent product, but it doesn’t measure up against our top five VPNs.
