Bitdefender is another excellent Mac antivirus solution, albeit sacrificing some speed compared to Norton 360. With support for macOS 10.10 or above, it’ll provide robust protection for some of the oldest machines.
While not quite as consistent as Norton 360, Bitdefender’s industry lab scoring is strong. Aside from occasional blips, the software typically scores near-perfect marks for performance, protection, and usability.
In our Bitdefender review, our experience was slightly different. We found the security features to offer excellent protection, and quick scans were over rapidly. But on longer scans, our CPU took a significant hit, using around 30-40%.
Otherwise, we love the straightforward user interface that allows you to see, at a glance, how your system is doing. You can quickly launch virus scans whenever you need to:

While not explicitly outlined on the website, we noted a post from a Bitdefender admin in the community forums, which confirms that the firewall feature is unsupported on Apple devices – as is webcam protection. It’s not a dealbreaker, though, as you can enable your Mac’s native firewall in your security settings, as well as control which apps access your webcam.

Avast Security for Mac has improved a lot over the years. It offers excellent malware protection with minimum impact on system performance, and that is why we have included it on our list of the best antivirus for Mac. Better yet, you can use Avast for free while still enjoying a powerful Mac antivirus that scores highly in lab tests.
Avast Free Antivirus for Mac has been around since 1995. We’ve had a lot of experience testing and reviewing this product since its inception, though our analysis hasn’t always agreed with industry testing.
Since December 2021, we’ve seen perfect scores from AV-Test for its free version. But in our Avast Antivirus review, we had concerns around privacy that resulted in a score of 3/10 for privacy practices.
The problem was twofold. We found evidence that Avast had sold user data to third parties as recently as 2020. Coupled with collecting user location data, we couldn’t award top marks to Avast. But despite that, Avast has pledged to no longer sell data, and the antivirus itself is admittedly a strong product.
The user interface is well-designed and easy to navigate. For free users, most functionality focuses on real-time threat protection, including ad-hoc or scheduled virus scans. The table below shows some of the features Avast offers.

Avira Free Antivirus has a real-time scanner that checks each file your system accesses. It can also recommend performance upgrades – for example, clearing out unused files. And it’ll delete tracking cookies on request.
Like Avast, Avira is split out into a free version and a premium version with upgrades – but not that many. Our Avira antivirus review covers both, but essentially in the free version of Avira Antivirus for Mac, you get the following:

Is Kaspersky Internet Security Safe?
Kaspersky Antivirus used to be considered one of the best antivirus for Mac, but it was recently flagged as a security threat. Unfortunately, given world events, Kaspersky’s antivirus software has fallen out of favor.
In March 2022, the FCC officially recognized Kaspersky as a national security threat. This list of banned software usually features Chinese companies exclusively. Kaspersky’s addition to the list is the first time that a Russian company has been classified as a threat due to current world events.

According to the FCC, software flagged as a national security threat “pose an unacceptable risk to national security or the security and safety of United States persons.”
Politics aside, we’d never recommend a solution that has been classed as a potential security threat, particularly by such an authoritative agency.
