When it comes to protecting yourself from online threats like malware, hackers, and identity theft, you need to choose the right security suite for your needs.

It can be incredibly confusing, not to mention expensive, to maintain separate subscriptions to all of these services. That’s where security suites step in. These collections of online protection tools will allow you to safeguard your online life through one account.

A good online security suite is essential, but not all are created equally. Some top antivirus providers with built-in VPNs, like McAfee Total Protection and Kaspersky Internet Security, are great for internet safety but have concerning policies that come with some privacy risks. Other suites are focused so much on VPNs and anonymity that they forget about good anti-malware solutions. With so many choices, how can you make sure you’re using the best security suite?

In this article, we’ll help you find the best internet security software and give you tips on what to look out for when choosing a security suite that fits your needs.

Top 10 Best Security Suites

1. NordVPN Complete: The Best Security Toolkit for Privacy

Screenshot of NordVPN website homepage, with added logo in the corner, May 2023

What We Like

  • Takes great care of your online privacy
  • Protects from online malware, trackers, and hackers
  • Password manager and cloud storage included
  • High-level VPN for more online freedom and security
  • Understandable apps that are easy to work with

What We Don't Like

  • Antivirus options are limited
  • Separate apps for NordPass and NordLocker

NordVPN Complete package offers one of our all-time favorite VPNs, malware protection, a password manager, an ad blocker, and more. We tested all of these tools separately and keep being impressed with the high level of security and privacy they offer.

We love NordVPN’s usability. Whether you’re a beginning user or an experienced techie, NordVPN Complete offers the perfect mix of a user-friendly app and customization opportunities. Do keep in mind that some of Nord’s tools, like NordPass, come with a separate app, so you’ll have to install both.

Nord’s VPN service is definitely its crowning piece. We tested its abilities in our NordVPN review and found that it kept our actual location or IP address perfectly safe while barely affecting our browsing speed. Of course, it also works perfectly for unblocking streaming platforms like Netflix. We have watched many a show on the American Netflix with NordVPN that we would otherwise have missed out on!

Screenshot of NordVPN interface, connected to US server

With NordPass’s password manager, we didn’t have to think up passwords for each new account we created any longer. NordPass did it for us and allowed us to log in with just one click, all without compromising our safety.

While Nord’s Threat Protection feature worked seamlessly for us, the one drawback is that it isn’t a fully-fledged antivirus program, so it cannot spot or remove existing viruses or malware from your device. We’d love to see Nord work on expanding their antivirus features in the future.

All in all, NordVPN Complete offers a broad collection of tools that protect your information and online traffic on countless levels. Of course, that is all supported by NordVPN’s airtight privacy policy and no logs policy.

Are you looking for an all-in-one solution that works on your computer, phone, and even your smart TV? If you ask us, NordVPN Complete is the best choice for anyone willing to invest in a good cybersecurity suite.

Want to try it out first? We recommend taking advantage of Nord’s 30-day money-back guarantee so you can get the full experience before committing.

2. Bitdefender Total Security: The Best Security Suite With Antivirus Software

Screenshot of Bitdefender homepage

What We Like

  • All-round package with top-notch antivirus
  • One app hosts all software
  • Reliable background software that's perfect for beginning users
  • Protects against viruses, ransomware, phishing, and more

What We Don't Like

  • Lacks a password manager
  • Can be hard to reach customer support
  • VPN comes with a data limit that doesn't guarantee full-time protection

Bitdefender offers one of the most complete and best security suites around. Think top-notch malware protection, a good VPN, and several other nifty tools that enhance security and privacy.

Many members of our VPNOverview team use Bitdefender’s antivirus software daily, and it has saved us from countless viruses and other malware. On top of that, our Bitdefender tests show that it has minimal impact on system performance, so you can enjoy optimal protection without sacrificing speed.

Some of its excellent security features include:

  • Ransomware protection to safeguard your documents, pictures, videos, and music from being held hostage
  • Web-attack prevention to ensure you never land on malicious websites
  • Social network protection to stay safe from malicious links and any online threats your friends (unwittingly) pass on to you on social media sites

We love Bitdefender’s interface. All features are neatly sorted into different categories, so you can easily customize your experience. At the same time, the standard features do their job well without needing your interference. That’s why we especially recommend Bitdefender Total Security for less-experienced internet users. Its only drawback is that it doesn’t have a 24/7 live chat as NordVPN does.

Screenshot of Bitdefender Antivirus. Dashboard

Bitdefender is subject to the GDPR, meaning you can view, edit, and delete the data collected by the company. While other options, like Nord Complete and Surfshark One, have more of a focus on privacy, Bitdefender still does a really good job of protecting user data.

Unfortunately, Bitdefender Total Security lacks a password manager and gives you a restricted version of their VPN. We’d rather have the unlimited experience, which is offered in a more expensive Bitdefender package, but found that Total Security is a great value-for-money option.

Bitdefender Total Security works on up to five or 10 devices. Since it works on Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS, you’ll be able to protect all your devices (and even your entire family) with just one subscription.

3. Surfshark One: A Robust Security Suite With a Top VPN for Secure Browsing

Screenshot of Surfshark homepage

What We Like

  • Effective antivirus software
  • User-friendly interface
  • VPN to protect your privacy
  • Secure browsing with no ads
  • Breach detection tool

What We Don't Like

  • Pricey monthly plan
  • No password manager
  • No firewall

The Surfshark One security suite offers a great combination of speed and security, making it one of our absolute favorites. It offers a VPN, antivirus, search, and alert tool, all combined in one user-friendly interface. Its VPN even allows an unlimited number of devices on one account: perfect for families!

Surfshark VPN is top-of-the-line and gives access to 3,200+ servers across 65 countries. During our tests of Surfshark VPN, we were able to unblock Netflix and other streaming services like Hulu, Disney Plus, and BBC iPlayer. The VPN also includes many extra tools, like CleanWeb, which serves as an ad blocker that keeps you safe from potential online threats and malware.

When we tested Surfshark’s relatively new antivirus solution, we liked the potential it showed. Scans take a while to complete, but Surfshark did not use much CPU or memory space. In short, we could get on with our usual day-to-day while better protected by Surfshark. You can read more of our thoughts in our Surfshark One review.

Screenshot of Surfshark Antivirus, Quick scan

Since antivirus software is a recent addition to Surfshark’s arsenal, it does come with some drawbacks. It’s not available on iOS, for example, and doesn’t have a firewall. Surfshark One also lacks parental controls and a password manager. However, Surfshark is known for its quick growth and improvements. We suspect new features will be added soon, making this security suite even more valuable.

If you’re looking for privacy, Surfshark can be your go-to. Its VPN is one of the best no-logs VPNs on the market, with an independently verified “no-logs policy, so you can rest assured that it’s trustworthy. It even uses a RAM-only server network, which means that there is no information stored on any hard drives: data is automatically deleted with every server reset. You can’t get a higher level of privacy than that!

If you’re unsure about whether or not you’d like to purchase Surfshark One, you can always use their 30-day money-back guarantee to try it out for a month, risk-free.

4. Proton Unlimited: The Best Security Suite With a Free Option

Screenshot of Proton homepage, February 2023

What We Like

  • Offers encrypted file storage, email, and calendar
  • Robust privacy policy
  • Completely free option available
  • Covers a wide range of devices

What We Don't Like

  • No protection against malware or viruses
  • Proton Mail and Proton Drive can be challenging to set up

When we think security, we think Proton. The best part of this provider is that it offers a basic security suite with a VPN (Proton VPN), secure email (Proton Mail), cloud storage (Proton Drive), and a private calendar (Proton Calendar), all completely for free.

Most free services give you questionable security and bogus tools, but Proton is truly different. With a rock-solid privacy policy and user-friendly features, it offers everything you need for a safe internet experience. Whether it’s your emails, calendar, files, or the sites you visit, you can count on Proton to encrypt and protect your data.

Proton Free does come with some limitations: it gives you one free email address and medium speeds on its VPN. If you’d rather have the full experience (and unblock streaming services, for example), you need to upgrade to the Proton Unlimited plan.

Proton Unlimited gives you access to the full version of Proton VPN, which is fast and feature-rich. When we tested it for our Proton VPN review, we especially loved how torrenting with Proton VPN was a breeze. We were able to download files in no time and didn’t notice any lag in our connection.

Screenshot of Proton VPN, kill switch

Proton is headquartered in Switzerland, a very privacy-friendly region. The company boasts a strict no-logs policy and only collects the necessary information about you (meaning your login data, payment info, and some anonymous statistics). This makes it one of the few providers with a free version that doesn’t see your data as payment — a definite plus for Proton!

The only major thing missing for Proton Unlimited users is an antivirus solution. We don’t know if this is in the cards for Proton anytime soon, but we sure hope it is! For now, we’d advise you to use a free antivirus option alongside your Proton package to make sure you’re fully protected online.

On the upside: Proton’s other services are incredibly easy to install and use, and customer support is excellent. The team can be contacted through form or email and is incredibly helpful and quick to respond, so you’ll never be stuck with unanswered questions or problems.

All in all, Proton Unlimited is a great option for those looking for more unique features, like secure email and cloud storage, in one package. Try it out for free!

5. Norton 360: Countless Security Tools in One Package

Screenshot of Norton homepage

What We Like

  • Effective malware protection
  • Comprehensive security suite for Windows and Mac
  • Password manager
  • Dark web monitor
  • Browser extension

What We Don't Like

  • Does not encrypt your files
  • Based in a 5 Eyes country
  • No file shredding feature

It’s impossible to talk about the best security suites without mentioning Norton 360. Out of all entries on this list, Norton might be the most complete one. It safeguards you against malware, spyware, and hackers, it comes with a password manager to help keep your passwords safe, and it offers a dark web monitor that will notify you if information like your email has been leaked on the dark web.

During our Norton 360 tests, we found that Norton 360 antivirus works just as well on macOS as it does on Windows, which puts it a notch above competitors like McAfee. You can do a quick, full, or file scan or set up scheduled scans so you won’t have to give your antivirus a second thought. With a 100% virus detection rate in recent independent tests, you can count on Norton to protect you.

Norton Antivirus Scan Options

While some other suites miss a firewall, Norton follows through perfectly: their Smart Firewall feature worked like a charm when we used it with our MacBook Pro. It kept an eye on our network traffic and flagged any suspicious files we came across.

While Norton’s Secure VPN isn’t our absolute favorite, it is still pretty good. It offers unlimited bandwidth with access to servers in 31 countries. Our Norton Secure VPN review shows that the servers were pretty fast, too. We were even able to unblock Netflix US and other streaming services, which was a nice surprise. Our biggest gripe? It does not protect against IPv6 and DNS leaks, which means your location and privacy could be compromised.

Speaking of privacy: Norton is based in the United States, which is part of the 5 Eyes intelligence alliance, meaning it may share your data with government authorities. Although Norton’s privacy policy is really decent, this makes us place Norton below other, more privacy-sensitive alternatives, like Nord.

Norton 360’s quality is undeniable. It may not be the most affordable or private security suite, but it provides top-notch security and real-time threat protection for all your devices, making it very deserving of a spot on our list.

6. Avira Prime: A Great Antivirus Service With Real-Time Malware Protection

Screenshot of Avira homepage

What We Like

  • Real-time detection of online threats
  • Private browsing
  • Secure password creation
  • Firewall
  • Unlimited VPN

What We Don't Like

  • VPN doesn't unblock all content
  • Renewal of subscription plans can be expensive
  • No antivirus protection on iOS

You might know Avira for the free antivirus and VPN they offer, but their comprehensive internet security suite, Avira Prime, has much more in store. If you own a small business, Avira Prime could be perfect for you, as you can use it on up to 25 devices, and it fulfills all your antivirus, VPN, and password managing needs.

Avira Antivirus works great, with near-perfect scores for blocking malware across the board. On top of that, it doesn’t have many false positives, meaning Avira protects your device well without accidentally mistaking your regular files for viruses. Want to learn more about this? You can read our full Avira Antivirus review for all the details.

Avira’s software boasts a very clean interface, so it’s a real pleasure to work with. It also offers a handy browser extension for enhanced web protection. However, not all other Avira Prime features are the same across operating systems. For example, on Windows, there is a PC cleaner, while Mac users get an automatic cookie cleaner, startup manager, and junk cleaner.

For mobile devices, antivirus protection is only available on Avira’s Android app and not on iOS.

Screenshot of Avira, Privacy section

Avira’s Phantom VPN gives some nice basic protection. It offers strong encryption with a modest server network but wasn’t able to unblock Netflix. Still, the premium VPN included in Avira Prime far exceeds the free version, which only gives you access to one server, specifically the one closest to you.

One area where Avira is currently lacking is live customer support. When we approached them, agents took a long time to reply, much to our dismay. It might be easier to contact support via email or phone instead. If you’re looking for a suite with a fast live chat, NordVPN Complete or Surfshark One might be more to your liking.

In terms of privacy, Avira isn’t the strongest option, as they do store your personal details. However, their privacy policy isn’t outrageous: your personal data will be anonymized or deleted once it’s no longer needed, and Avira promises to only share your personal data if you agree to it.

All in all, Avira Prime offers a solid package that is especially great for small businesses as well as anyone looking for simple yet effective real-time protection.

7. Trend Micro Premium Security: Cheap Protection for Your Online Banking Activities

Screenshot of TrendMicro website homepage, May 2023

What We Like

  • Protection against malware and other online threats
  • Password manager
  • Identity theft protection
  • Dark web monitoring
  • 24/7 customer support

What We Don't Like

  • VPN has a small server network and low speeds
  • Collects a lot of personal information
  • Its interface is not very user-friendly

Many security suites tend to be quite expensive for the array of features they offer. That isn’t the case for Trend Micro Premium Security: it offers comprehensive protection with countless options that can be used on up to ten devices. This a great deal for anyone looking for a quick cybersecurity solution!

Trend Micro offers several great security features that aren’t provided by even the best security suites on the market, including identity theft protection and secure online banking. We were especially impressed with Trend Micro’s data monitoring feature, as it covers five bank accounts and 10 credit cards. On top of that, its social media privacy checker monitors your social networks to identify threats and privacy risks – a unique and useful addition.

Screenshot of TrendMicro, quick scan in progress

The Trend Micro software was straightforward to install, but we found it pretty overwhelming to use. There were a lot of options, making it challenging to find your way around the app. The software also tended to slow down the performance of our device during full scans.

On the plus side, Trend Micro’s customer support is easily available 24/7 through live chat, email, and over the phone. You can even get support through social media such as Facebook Messenger, which makes Trend Micro very approachable.

Although we like the addition of Trend Micro’s VPN Proxy One Pro, you shouldn’t expect too much from this basic VPN. It has a small server network, and its speeds were not the best. The good news is that it worked well when we used it to unblock Netflix and other streaming content. We hope Trend Micro will add more standard safety features like a kill switch soon.

While it isn’t the best or most private security suite, Trend Micro Premium Security undeniably offers a good deal. Just a few dollars a month for all-around protection is rare. You can even get a 30-day free trial before committing to Trend Micro. Check out this offer now by clicking the button below to visit the Trend Micro website and access this extensive range of security features.

8. TotalAV Total Security: Affordable Security Suite With a User-Friendly Interface

Screenshot of TotalAV, homepage

What We Like

  • Malware and virus protection
  • Safeguards against phishing scams
  • Offers an ad blocker
  • Includes an effective disk cleaner feature
  • Provides a buit-in VPN with a kill switch

What We Don't Like

  • Based in the UK (5 Eyes country)
  • May store your IP address and device indentifier information

TotalAV is another budget-friendly antivirus software option that includes an ad blocker, simple VPN, and disk cleaning feature. It’s one of the newer players in the market but has managed to make a name for itself in a short time. Experts are impressed by its near-perfect malware detection, and we are too.

With TotalAV, you’ll be protected against phishing scams and ransomware attacks. On top of that, its effective ad blocker prevents malicious (and just plain annoying) ads from reaching your device. We especially liked TotalAV’s disk cleaner feature, as it helps you delete junk files and folders, making your computer faster in the blink of an eye. You’d be surprised how much space you can free up in your device.

While conducting our TotalAV review, Total Security worked smoothly without any issues. Even if you do run into problems, you can contact customer support directly through your account dashboard. A small but appreciated extra is that TotalAV has many helpful tutorials and guides, which helped us troubleshoot by ourselves.

Screenshot of TrotalAV, full scan in progress

TotalAV Total Security’s built-in VPN is called Safe Browsing VPN, and it gave a pretty decent performance. You’ll get unlimited data and reliable connections. The speeds we got while testing were good enough for daily browsing, although we wouldn’t recommend using it for unblocking. If streaming is a priority, you’ll have better luck with one of our tried and tested Netflix VPNs.

Like Trend Micro, TotalAV is not as privacy-focused as we would like it to be, although it is still a perfectly acceptable option for those who are looking for strong basic protection for their computer. If you want to test the TotalAV software but are worried about committing, the company offers a 30-day money-back guarantee when you sign up for any annual plan, so you can use it completely risk-free.

9. Kaspersky Premium: Best Security Suite for Families

Screenshot of Kaspersky website homepage, May 2023

What We Like

  • Real-time antivirus protection
  • Detects zero-day threats
  • Online payment protection
  • Parental controls
  • Identity protection
  • One free year of Kaspersky Safe Kids

What We Don't Like

  • Based in Russia
  • Gathers license and subscription data
  • Built-in VPN doesn't provide much traffic bandwidth

We’ve reviewed Kaspersky through its ups and downs and decided that its Premium package deserves a spot on our list of best cybersecurity suites. Aside from expert-approved antivirus software, Kaspersky offers online payment protection, an unlimited VPN, identity protection, performance optimization tools, and top-of-the-line parental control software.

Kaspersky Premium comes with one free year of Kaspersky Safe Kids, making this suite the perfect solution for families with children. During our dedicated Kaspersky Safe Kids review, we found that its internet filters worked exactly the way we wanted them to. You can also set screen time and app usage limits and even track your kids’ devices through GPS in case they lose them.

In terms of antivirus software, Kaspersky’s real-time protection is extremely effective. We attempted downloading test files disguised as malware, and Kaspersky sent us a notification straight away. The files were blocked in the browser and never made their way to our system: our Kaspersky tests were a true success.

Kaspersky blocks virus test file message

Privacy is the biggest issue that experts and users have with Kaspersky. The company has been flagged as suspicious in the USA and Europe because of its alleged ties to the Russian government. Since Kaspersky is based in Russia, it could be bound by law to aid the Russian intelligence service if requested. While there is no physical proof of this so far, we understand that not everyone might feel comfortable using Kaspersky.

Although Kaspersky Premium didn’t make it to the very top of our list of best cybersecurity suites, it still offers an impressive set of features. You can get a plan for up to 20 devices, so one tool will work on all your (and your kids’) devices. It’s not hard to set up, either: you can share individual apps with family members in just a few clicks.

In short, the Kaspersky Premium security suite is an excellent affordable software package for families to stay safe and anonymous online.

10. McAfee: A Comprehensive Security Suite for Windows

Screenshot of McAfee website homepage, May 2023

What We Like

  • Antivirus software
  • Firewall and web protection
  • Identity monitoring
  • User-friendly app that is great for beginners

What We Don't Like

  • The VPN cannot unblock Netflix and has a limited server network
  • Stores and provides some of your personal information to third parties

Rounding off our list of security suites is McAfee, a well-known antivirus provider that has also expanded into the overall cybersecurity realm. It provides some useful security features, like a firewall and web protection, and works particularly well for Windows users.

When we tested its antivirus options for our McAfee review, we took a liking to its user-friendly software, which is particularly suited for beginners. However, some of its features are quite basic, without any advanced settings, which is why we wouldn’t recommend it to more seasoned security suite users. That said, McAfee Safe Connect is a dependable choice if you’re looking to simply “connect and forget.”

McAfee’s File Shredder is a perfect tool to help maintain your privacy. We used it to destroy our old files safely and were pleasantly surprised. If you select the “Completed” option, the file will be “shredded” ten times, so it’s impossible to recover it, even with special software.

Screenshot of McAfee app, File Shredder

While the antivirus options all worked as expected, we ran into a hiccup on our Apple computer. It seems that the firewall doesn’t work on macOS. We even reached out to customer support, but they weren’t able to resolve the issue, either. Since we consider firewalls pretty important to the protection of any system, we therefore only recommend McAfee for Windows users. Apple users might find themselves more at home with Bitdefender or Norton.

Like is often the case with VPNs by antivirus providers, McAfee’s Safe Connect VPN offers very minimal protection. It doesn’t have the same security features as more developed VPNs, offers a limited server network that doesn’t allow unblocking, and comes with average speeds. Even so, we appreciate its inclusion in this otherwise cohesive security suite.

While McAfee is not the best option for privacy, considering its logging of your IP and search history, its combination of strong antivirus solutions and a user-friendly interface make it a worthy final addition to our list. If you’d like to try it out, simply click the button below to head straight to McAfee’s website.

How to Choose the Best Security Suite for Your Needs

With so many options out there, it can be tricky to choose between the best security suites for your specific needs. Here are three important points to consider before making a choice:

  • The type and number of devices: Do you want a suite for just a single device or one that works equally well across different platforms, like iOS and Windows? Are you looking for a solution for the whole family? Always check the device compatibility and the number of devices you can use with a subscription before making a purchase.
  • Any specific features you need: If you live in a country with strict censorship, you may prefer getting a suite with a strong VPN to bypass online censorship, such as NordVPN. Or maybe you want to prioritize anonymity and use the software with the strongest privacy policy, such as Proton. It’s important to consider your individual preferences to ensure that the security suite you pick matches your needs.
  • Value-for-money: Maybe you’re a student on a budget looking for a free or inexpensive security solution. Or maybe you’re leading a company that needs premium top-of-the-shelf solutions in order to keep itself safe. At the end of the day, your budget plays a vital role in determining what software package you pick.

Final Thoughts: What’s the Best Security Suite?

Internet security suites are software packages that contain multiple tools to ensure your online security. Typically, they include antivirus protection, a VPN, and other features like password management and parental controls. However, you need to be cautious about which internet security software you choose as many collect a lot of user data which can end up compromising your privacy instead of protecting it.

After careful evaluation, we recommend NordVPN Complete as the best security suite since it includes malware protection, a password manager, and an ad blocker, plus a fast and secure VPN. Its only downside is that its antivirus options are a bit limited, but we are confident that this will improve in the future.

The Best Security Suites: Frequently Asked Questions

Got a question about the best security suites? We’ve got you covered. Check out the FAQ below and click or tap on a question to view the answer.

What is a security suite?

A security suite is a software package that offers multiple internet security and privacy solutions in one. They might, for example, include an antivirus app, a VPN, and a password manager. Some of the best security suites include NordVPN, Bitdefender Total Security, and Surfshark One.

Who is the best internet security provider?

There are many great internet security providers that offer tools to help protect you online. Our top recommendation is NordVPN Complete, which provides reliable protection with its VPN, password manager, and malware protection tool.

Which is the best internet security for PC?

Bitdefender Internet Security is a great all-in-one security solution specifically created for PC. It includes protection against all kinds of threats such as malware, ransomware, phishing, and more, plus a limited version of Bitdefender VPN for secure browsing. You can read all about it in our Bitdefender review.

Do I need a password manager if I use a VPN?

Yes, you need a password manager when you use a VPN. Both tools are very effective, but serve entirely different purposes:

  • A password manager securely stores your passwords in one place so you can easily access them.
  • A VPN encrypts your online traffic and helps you become more anonymous online.

If you’re looking for an all-in-one solution, we recommend NordVPN complete. It offers both a great VPN (NordVPN) and a password manager (NordPass) and came out on top in our list of best cybersecurity suites.

Is McAfee or Norton VPN better?

After extensive testing, we recommend Norton’s Secure VPN over McAfee, because it is more reliable and fast across all devices. However, if privacy is your priority, we recommend choosing a top VPN provider like Surfshark or NordVPN, since they do not collect any user data.
