If you like YouTube but hate the seemingly endless ads, you’ve come to the right place! Not everyone is willing or able to spend over $10 a month on YouTube Premium. Luckily, there is an easy way to get a discount on YouTube Premium.

The cost of YouTube Premium is significantly less in some countries than in the U.S. In Turkey, for example, you can get a YouTube Premium subscription for as little as $1.19 per month. This means that you can change your location with a VPN and get a great deal on your YouTube Premium subscription. We’ve tested this, and it works.

In this article, we’ll show you how to get a YouTube Premium discount, wherever you are!

How to Get the YouTube Premium Discount

Important Notice:

YouTube has updated its credit card approval process, meaning you may need a credit card from the country you’re trying to use to sign up.

You can save on YouTube Premium by subscribing from a country with comparatively lower prices. Luckily, you don’t have to travel halfway across the world to the cheapest YouTube Premium country to make this work. Simply use a VPN!

A VPN allows you to spoof your location by changing your IP address. When you connect to a VPN server in a country with cheaper YouTube Premium subscription rates, like Turkey, YouTube will assume you’re in that country and show you lower prices.

Here’s how to get a YouTube Premium discount:

  1. Subscribe to a solid VPN. We used NordVPN to get a YouTube Premium discount.

YouTube Premium discount with a VPN: Debunking myths and other relevant details

While using a VPN is a great way to get a YouTube Premium discount, there are some essential things to take note of:

  • Your monthly subscription fee will be billed to your card in the currency of the country you selected. You may have to deal with currency conversion fees, depending on the card you’re using.
  • You don’t always need a VPN to access YouTube Premium and watch videos. You only need one to sign up and get a YouTube Premium membership. However, if you log into your Premium account from a country that doesn’t have YouTube Premium, you’ll lose most of your Premium benefits for that session.
  • This method also works with the YouTube Premium Family plan. However, you’ll need to invite everyone and have them accept before you start this process.
  • You don’t need a VPN to get the YouTube Premium student discount. Also, there is no YouTube Premium military discount.
  • YouTube could terminate your subscription for using a VPN to get a discount. While this is rare, it is not unheard of. You should be aware of this risk and accept this possibility before you click “Buy.”

YouTube Premium free trial offers

Another way to save on YouTube is by looking for longer YouTube Premium trial offers. YouTube usually offers a one-month trial for Premium, but sometimes you’ll find a special two, or even three-month free trial offer.

Want to find out if you can use a YouTube Premium free trial offer like this? Log in to your Google account, then go to YouTube Premium to see if you qualify. You should see one of the two pages below.

At the time of writing, most of the affordable countries for YouTube premium have advantageous sign-up deals. Turkey and Argentina both offered a two-month free trial with every new sign-up when we tested it. Romania offered a one-month free trial.

To get the offers, simply use NordVPN to connect to servers in said countries, and then go to the YouTube Premium sign-up page.

Note:

For a completely free experience, don’t forget to cancel your YouTube Premium subscription before the end of your free trial, or your subscription will automatically switch to a paid one.

What’s Included in a YouTube Premium Subscription?

Wondering if you should subscribe to YouTube Premium? Here’s what you get when you subscribe:

  • Ad-free YouTube experience: YouTube eliminates all YouTube-distributed ads (the ones that play before your video starts). However, even with Premium, you will still see ads, commercials, and sponsored content embedded in videos and live streams.
  • Downloads: With Premium, you can download videos for offline viewing.
  • Background play: You can play YouTube videos while using other apps or while your phone is locked.
  • Access to YouTube Originals: You get access to extra content, including movies, shows, and features you can’t stream elsewhere.
  • YouTube Music Premium: You’ll be able to use this YouTube music streaming service, and you get no ads, can download and play offline, and listen to music when your device is locked.

If you use YouTube a lot, the paid subscription makes sense. However, if you use it occasionally and you’re subscribed to other music streaming services like Amazon Music or Spotify, some of YouTube Premium’s benefits may be of little value to you.

The Best YouTube Premium VPN: Our Top 5

While we used NordVPN to get a huge YouTube Premium discount, you can also use other VPNs to get a cheap subscription. However, not all VPNs can circumvent YouTube’s geographic discount restrictions. That’s why we tested dozens of VPNs and found these five best VPNs to get a cheaper YouTube Premium membership.

NordVPN is the best YouTube Premium VPN. We tested its ability to get cheaper YouTube Premium costs, and it works! Overall, NordVPN is one of our favorite options for unblocking. It has thousands of servers spread out over 60 countries, including 14 servers in Turkey. Besides that, many other countries with cheap YouTube Premium subscriptions are included in their network, too. This makes it easy to find the best YouTube Premium deals.

This provider also has a super-friendly user interface and supports manual server refreshing, which is useful if your server doesn’t immediately unblock a YouTube Premium discount.

Not to mention, NordVPN is one of the fastest VPNs on the market, according to our tests, meaning you can watch YouTube videos without any lag. But NordVPN isn’t just useful for getting YouTube Premium discounts.

On top of that, it uses some of the safest protocols, namely OpenVPN, IKEv2, and WireGuard, which means you get the very best online security while browsing. We’ve even used NordVPN to unblock streaming platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Max! So if you’re looking for a great tool to get cheap YouTube Premium and more, NordVPN is a safe bet.

2. PIA: A tried-and-tested VPN to get a YouTube Premium discount!

Screenshot of PIA website

What We Like:

  • Expansive server network of 33,000+ servers for optimal unblocking options
  • Proven no-logs policy and secure infrastructure
  • Decent speed test results so you can watch YouTube without a worry

What We Don't Like:

  • Not as fast and reliable as NordVPN

PIA is one of our top-raking VPNs, and our YouTube Premium tests clearly showed it’s deserving of that title. With this VPN, we were able to connect to a PIA server in Turkey and get a massive YouTube Premium discount!

If any other country surpasses Turkey as the cheapest YouTube Premium country in the future, PIA still has you covered. It has one of the largest server networks of all the VPNs we’ve tested — more than 33,000 servers spread out over 84 countries. PIA has servers in countries that many VPNs don’t, like the Philippines. This allows you to easily find cheaper YouTube Premium subscriptions.

PIA’s speeds are suitable for watching videos on YouTube. It also works with the same strong VPN protocols as NordVPN and has great unblocking abilities. We’ve successfully used this VPN to unblock content on various streaming platforms, including Netflix, HBO Max, Disney Plus, and BBC iPlayer.

PIA is also quite affordable if you go for a two-year subscription, which costs only $2.11 monthly. Read our PIA review to learn more about what you stand to gain by choosing this VPN.

3. Surfshark: An affordable choice to unblock YouTube Premium discounts

Screenshot of Surfshark VPN provider website homepage

What We Like:

  • Great speed test results for seamless streaming
  • Seven-day free trial and cheap subscriptions
  • Use it on unlimited devices at the same time

What We Don't Like:

  • Inconsistent results for YouTube Premium

Surfshark is one of the most affordable VPNs on the market. If you’re looking for a cheap option to get YouTube Premium at a discount, Surfshark’s low base price, plus their regular discounts, make it one of the best picks for you. Not to mention, if you sign up from mobile, you also get a seven-day free trial! That’s more than enough time to get YouTube Premium Argentina or any of the other affordable subscriptions.

Don’t let Surfshark’s low price fool you. This provider is a high-quality VPN, with great speed test results. This means that you won’t have to worry about lag when watching your favorite video essays or cat videos on YouTube.

We tested Surfshark extensively to see whether it works with YouTube Premium. In our tests, we were able to access YouTube Premium deals in India, Indonesia, Serbia, South Africa, and Egypt. However, we had inconsistent results in top locations like Turkey and Argentina. Luckily, with some help from customer support, we could get it working there, too. In short, it might take some effort, but Surfshark will be able to get you those YouTube Premium discounts.

Not sure Surfshark is right for you? Check out our Surfshark test for more information, or simply try it out yourself. On top of the seven-day free trial for mobile, you can try it for a month without committing to a full plan with their 30-day money-back guarantee.

Screenshot of CyberGhost homepage, June 2023

  • Good speed test results, so you'll be able to easily watch videos online in 1080p

What We Don't Like:

  • Can only be used on five devices at a time

ExpressVPN is one of the best picks if you need an easy-to-use VPN for YouTube. Anyone can set it up, even without prior knowledge of how to use VPNs. If you want to log into YouTube from those platforms, it’s a great choice.

Not to mention, ExpressVPN’s support team is quick to respond and very helpful. If you run into any problems, they’ll be able to help!

Besides ease of use, ExpressVPN also stands out with its large server network. They have over 3,000 servers in 94 countries, which means that you can access YouTube Premium deals in dozens of countries. • Priscilla Sherman VPNOverview.com

Hi Don! We recently retested the entire process, and it did work for us when trying to use a Turkish VPN server, to get the prices in Turkey. Let us know if that works for you (we’ve updated the article above so you can simply follow the steps in there again) and, if not, feel free to reach out to tell us what exact problem you’re facing. Good luck!

Great Info. Thank You. How does one bypass the Can’t verify your country?

    • Priscilla Sherman VPNOverview.com

We are currently looking into this and running some tests. We will update our article with the latest information as soon as possible!

  3. Karl L

I had heard of this hack before, never got around to trying it.. and then, sat with my son, saw the long adverts that he had to sit through.

With VPN, and an using a random address in Argentina (found a restaurant from Google maps) was able to sign-up despite using my UK Mastercard – usual bank confirmation processes, but didn’t get any problems, although it’s certainly a UK card, not Argentina.

    • Priscilla Sherman VPNOverview.com

Hi Karl! We’re glad this method worked for you! It’s not a guaranteed method at the moment, due to the restrictions, but sometimes you might get lucky. 🙂

  4. Marco

I don’t know why mine is not working. I
already tried to use VPN to do the
subscription but it is still not working!
The system denied me! It still saying because I’m in a different country so I can’t join this family plan…

    • David Janssen VPNOverview.com

Hi Marco! Unfortunately, many people (including ourselves) have been experiencing these issues since YouTube Premium updated their credit card approval process. We’re looking for a new solution, but that might take some time. Bear with us!

  5. Ryan Burnham

The payment screen is the issue with this, it gets denied every time. I’ve tried clearing my cache, using Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and my mobile browser. I’ve tried multiple Visas and Mastercards, a crypto card, manipulating the addresses, Argnetina, India, Turkey, and just about everything else I can think of and it gets denied on the payment screen every time.

    • David Janssen VPNOverview.com

We’re sorry to hear it still isn’t working after all the effort you put into it. It appears YouTube has changed its subscription process. We’re going to run our own tests and update the article accordingly. If there is a way around this, you’ll be able to read it here soon!

  6. JS

    Didn’t work for me.
    Set up family group.
    Used this method.
Get an error message that I have to contact Google.

    • David Janssen VPNOverview.com

That’s very unfortunate! It appears that something has changed on YouTube’s side since the last time we tested this. We’re going to dive into it and update the article with a (hopefully) working method soon.

  7. Juan metra

Do i have to keep running the VPN or once the youtube premium is bought i can use it in any country with no issues.?

    • David Janssen VPNOverview.com

Once you’ve got it, you can use it anywhere, although it won’t always work the same way. If you’re in a country where Premium isn’t available (yet) YouTube Premium might show some ads and you might not be allowed to download videos. If this happens, turning on the VPN and refreshing the page should help. In any of the many countries where YouTube Premium is available, you won’t have any issues and can just use Premium as you would with the VPN on.
